Logo Designer – Rob Janoff (Apple Logo)

    2010 - 10.25

The logo designer that I chose to highlight is Rob Janoff.  Rob Janoff is best known for designing the current Apple logo.  The first iteration was an apple with rainbow colors.  The rainbow was meant to humanize the company.  The bite out of the apple was done so that people didn’t mistaken it for a tomato.  It was also a nerdy play on words bite/byte.

The rainbow colors was changed to a monochrome icon because reportedly Steve Jobs wanted a more sophisticated look.

    Logo as of 1998

Apple’s original logo was designed by Ronald Wayne and feature Newton and the apple tree.  Ronald Wayne was considered the third founder of Apple.  The original logo was soon replaced by Rob Janoff’s logo.

    Logo and Brand Design

    2010 - 10.18

This week we had to design a logo/brand for ourselves.   I chose to use my computer repair business “Sanity Savers”.  I spent a lot of time deciding which typefaces to use.  For “Sanity Saver” I chose Franklin Gothic Std., with a No.2 Roman for font style.  The “PC & Mac Computer Repair” I chose Bank Gothic and Light for font style.  For the contact information I chose Thonburi.  I used a medical cross a universal symbol for help.

The message I want to convey for my logo and brand is a sense of salvation.  When peoples computers misbehave, people begin to panic and become frustrated.  I want my logo and brand to give the sense that everything will be ok if they contact us.

    Traceroute the Earth

    2010 - 10.06

We had to traceroute 24 different websites.  I decide to try and find websites on every continent even Antarctica.   The results from this assignment were very interesting and surprising.   The routes that the traceroute traveled were counterintuitive.  For instance in my effort to find a server in Antarctica the traceroute traveled from New York to Canada to Alaska and then ending up in New Zealand.  I never made it to Antarctica.  Another interesting result was finding the location for the web server of the government of Ghana, Africa.  It’s not in Ghana but in Atlanta, Georgia.

In my map below I colored Internet Exchange Providers that appear 3 or more times (the big providers).   I omitted any server addresses that bounced around the same provider.

    Typography and Expression

    2010 - 10.04

First for this assignment we had to choose 6 different typefaces for my name.  The following is what I chose.

    Bank Gothic

    Copperplate Gothic

    Kozuka Gothic

    Snell Roundhand

    Trajan Pro

    All the typefaces together.

For the second part of the assignment we had to create expressions for the words we used. Here are my examples.
